Zoning
Understanding zoning
Each municipality names its zones differently. These ten families are starting points for understanding them — not legal zone names. Your property's actual zoning comes from the municipality's records and scheme.
Single residential
Zones intended mainly for one main dwelling per property, often with limited additional uses.
General residential
Zones for higher-density housing such as townhouses, flats and group housing.
General business
Zones for a wide range of commercial uses, often in town centres and along main roads.
Local business
Smaller-scale business zones serving surrounding neighbourhoods.
Industrial
Zones for manufacturing, warehousing and related activities, often split into light and general industry.
Agricultural
Zones for farming and rural land, often subject to national agricultural controls as well.
Mixed use
Zones that combine residential, business and other uses on the same property or in the same area.
Institutional
Zones for schools, places of worship, clinics and similar community facilities.
Open space
Zones for public and private open space, parks and conservation.
Transport
Zones for roads, railways and other transport infrastructure.
This website does not look up the zoning of individual properties. Obtain a zoning certificate or check the municipality's official records, and we can help interpret them.
